Benin is the second largest cashew nut producer in West Africa. In 1990, the demand for cashew nuts increased significantly, which prompted Benin to propose a plan to expand cashew nut production. So in 2008, the scale of cashew plantations in Benin expanded from approximately 10,000 hectares to over 190,000 hectares. Data shows that since 2021, Benin has produced 300,000 tons of cashew nuts. Of the 116,398 tons of cashew nuts exported from Benin, 15% came from neighboring countries such as Nigeria, Togo and Burkina Faso.
